Field-goal percentage is only part of the story, and in a league with a 3-point line, it is a very misleading part of the story. After all, points are the ultimate currency in the NBA.When we visualize the average points per shot according to shot location, only then does the true economic landscape of the contemporary NBA reveal itself. Only then does Daryl Morey’s economic vision become clear. Only then do we see the massive economic subsidy represented by the 3-point line. And when we compare the points-per-shot map with the field-goal percentage map, we are left with a troubling thought about the contemporary geography of NBA basketball. If it’s true that 3-point shots go in 36 percent of the time and 10-foot shots go in just 40 percent of the time, then why are we assigning 50 percent more value to shots from beyond that magical little arc?The natural landscape depicted in the field-goal percentage map demonstrates that jump shooting in the NBA is essentially a 35 to 45 percent proposition; however, some of those shots are worth 3 and some are worth 2. Naturally, as basic economics would predict, the behavior of players and teams has reacted in the form of shot selection. When we overlay the most common 200 shot locations in today’s NBA, we see that shot selection and economic efficiency are aligned. No wonder 2-point jump shooting is dying. Aha. Now we’re getting somewhere. Now we can see that the probability of a shot going through the net greatly depends on where that shot came from. This insight is not surprising on its own, but it does reveal specifics about the basic relationships between distance, direction and field-goal percentage. What did surprise me when I first studied this chart was learning that outside of 6 feet, there is no place on the court where shooters make more than 45 percent of their shots. I’d always thought that 50 percent was the magic field-goal percentage threshold, but this graphic shows that the only place on the floor where players exceed that magic number is the tiny swath of space just in front of the basket. The next thing I noticed was even more surprising. When you look at leaguewide shooting numbers between 6 and 25 feet, the league is strangely consistent. I expected to see a marked decrease in field-goal percentage with greater distance: I thought shorter jump shots would go in at higher rates than longer jump shots. While this is true, the effect is much more subtle than I would have expected. As it turns out, NBA players make only 40 percent of their shots between 8 and 9 feet from the rim, and that number drops to only 35 percent between 25 and 26 feet from the rim. When it comes to field-goal percentage on jump shots, the effect of shot distance is pretty minor. It was a revelation, and it drove me to quickly build the following map, which would forever change the way I viewed scoring in the NBA. The graphic is more than just a shitload of dots. This basic plot shows us where on the floor the most important concentrations of field-goal attempts occurred in 2014-15. We can see that there was a major hub of shooting activity near the basket and another band of activity out beyond the 3-point arc. We can also see that the league’s shooters were generally less active in the 2-point jump-shooting areas between the arc and the paint, but this plot says nothing about the relative values or successes of shots in different areas. Each one of these dots has a backstory. Each one has a shooter attached, a team attached and an outcome attached. We know who took each shot and whether it went in or not. And we can smooth out these dots statistically and map out the overall field-goal percentage of the NBA as a collective. Every year, NBA players take about 200,000 shots. Each season, 30 teams combine to play 1,230 games, and at the end of the regular season, you can bet the sum total of shots taken will be very close to 200,000. In the hands of a cartographer, a season’s worth of this shooting data is a veritable treasure trove of information. But here’s the thing: In the first decade of this century, there weren’t many cartographers working in the NBA league office or for analytics departments in any of the team front offices.Back then, basketball analytics was still in its infancy; it was all about spreadsheets and linear regression, not spatial and visual reasoning. Still, whether the league knew it or not, by adding these little spatial references to their game data, basketball analytics was about to become a lot more than spreadsheets. Things like data visualization and spatial analyses were going to be very important.Unfortunately, there weren’t many folks with those skills working in pro basketball, and even though countless analysts had access to all the data the league was collecting — including all of the shot data — nobody was applying a spatial treatment. Nobody was mapping the NBA.[Related: Kirk Goldsberry joins Hot Takedown to discuss his new book.]When I first got my hands on these massive haystacks of shooting data, I was teaching cartography at Harvard. I’d found a way to retrieve five seasons’ worth of shooting data from the web, and I built a database that included over 1 million NBA field-goal attempts, who shot them and where they shot them from. As an analyst, I knew there was amazing intelligence waiting to be revealed within the database. As a mapmaker, I was confident I could visualize some of it in cool new ways. And as a huge NBA fan, I couldn’t wait to see the results.Although I was desperate to chart out the shooting abilities of players like Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki, the first thing I wanted to see was the basic shooting patterns of the entire league. When you plot an entire season’s worth of shot data, some interesting patterns quickly emerge: Kirk Goldsberry is an ESPN analyst and FiveThirtyEight contributor. His new book, “SprawlBall: A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA,” is available this week. In it, he examines the history of the NBA’s 3-point line and how players and teams are using it to change the game. We’re publishing an excerpt of the book on how the NBA’s genome is mapped. Then redshirt-sophomore Michael Bernard rolls a putt during an event in the 2014-15 season. Bernard took part in the 2015 U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois from Aug. 17-23. Photo Courtesy of Ohio State AthleticsThree Ohio State golfers obtained extra preparation for the upcoming collegiate season after they competed in their respective U.S. Amateur Championships this month. Redshirt junior Michael Bernard and freshman Will Grimmer both participated in the 115th playing of the U.S. Amateur, which lasted from Aug. 17 to 23, at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois, after qualifying at regional tournaments this summer. Junior Jessica Porvasnik joined her fellow Buckeyes as she teed it up at the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon, from Aug. 10 to 16. For both tournaments, players competed in a two-day stroke play tournament to begin the event. The 64 players with the lowest two-round score advanced to a match play tournament that eventually crowned a champion. Bernard, who was playing in his first U.S. Amateur, did not advance past the two stroke play rounds after tallying a 9-over-par 149. During his first round on Olympia Fields’ South Course, the Huber Heights, Ohio, native did not play up to his expectations. He struggled getting off the tee en route to carding a 9-over-par 79. “I got off to a really bad start,” Bernard said. “I just didn’t hit the ball very good and played mediocre.” However that all changed for Bernard on the second day. On the North Course — traditionally regarded as the tougher of the courses at Olympia Fields — he bounced back, shooting an even-par 70. Although he did not advance to the match play, Bernard said the improvement from day one to day two is a confidence booster for him as the collegiate season approaches. Overall, Bernard said he is “fairly happy” with his performance at his first U.S. Amateur — which is the oldest golf championship in America. For Grimmer, the other Buckeye in the men’s field, this was his second appearance at the tournament after competing in 2014 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia. The Cincinnati native, who also played in the 2014 U.S. Open, completed the two rounds of stroke play with a 1-over-par 141. His score tied him for 27th place, allowing him to advance to the match play tournament. Grimmer credited playing in two major tournaments last summer as a reason why he was able to perform well at Olympia Fields. “Those two experiences were huge for me,” he said. “It helped me to be able to deal with the pressure of all the media being there, the crowds and cameras on every hole. The nerves didn’t seem to bother me this year.” In his first match against Arizona State’s Broc Johnson, he trailed for most of the front nine. Grimmer was playing well but Johnson was better, having tallied three birdies through six holes. “He was just going off,” Grimmer said. “Michael, my caddie, was just telling me to stay patient because (Johnson) was going to come back to Earth a little.” Grimmer won the par-3 seventh hole and the par-4 ninth to even the match at the turn. “I saw him get a little flustered,” Grimmer said. “Once you see your opponent show a little emotion, it’s easy to kind of pick your feet up a little and say, ‘I got this guy.’” A strong back nine, featuring three birdies in the final four holes, allowed Grimmer to complete his comeback and defeat Johnson. The following day in the round of 32, Grimmer faced Robby Shelton, a junior at the University of Alabama. Shelton — who is a member of the 2015 U.S. Walker Cup Team — led most of the match, eventually closing out Grimmer on the 16th hole. “Once you get to the top 32 in the U.S. Am, you’re playing against the best players in the world. You can’t make stupid mistakes. You can’t hand him holes, you’ve got to make him win the holes,” he said. “I just made a couple of mistakes that earlier in the week I wasn’t making.” Although he fell short of hoisting the Havemeyer Trophy, Grimmer said he believes that his performance at the U.S. Amateur will be crucial as he enters his first season of collegiate golf. “The experience here is going to be huge in terms of what it takes to go out and try to help win tournaments for the team,” he said. Grimmer, Bernard and the rest of the OSU men’s golf team are slated to open their 2015-16 season on Sept. 4 in the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, California, at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. For Porvasnik — who also played in the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open — this was her second career appearance in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Last year in the U.S. Amateur, the former Big Ten Player of the Year won two matches, advancing all the way to the round of 16 before her pursuit of the Robert Cox Trophy was cut short by Andrea Lee. She began her first round in 2015 steadily, putting well on the front side that lead to an even par-35. Junior Jessica Porvasnik completes a swing for the OSU women’s golf team. Porvasnik was one of three OSU golfers to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship on August 10-16 in Portland, Oregon. On the back side, things began to head south. Porvasnik made bogey on the par-4 11th, then dropped three more shots on the closing nine en route to carding a 4-over-par 76 for the day. She again shot a 4-over-par 76 on the second day, bringing her total stroke play score to an 8-over-par 152. Although she did not qualify for the match play for a second consecutive year, Porvasnik gained a clear picture of what she needs to work on for the upcoming season. “My putting and chipping was really good,” she said. “I learned I need to work on my ball striking and stay patient.” Porvasnik said she has “big goals” for the Buckeyes this season. She hopes they can improve upon their seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2013-14 and make it a third consecutive campaign with at least a share of the Big Ten title. Porvasnik and the rest of OSU women’s golf team are scheduled to begin their pursuit of these goals when they open their 2015-16 season on Sept. 14 at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. read more

With a presence in so many markets, Samsung has its hands full with trying to stay ahead of the game across its product lines. From phones and cameras to laptops and televisions, Samsung is an incredibly multifarious company. At IFA 2011, Samsung’s powerful new laptop, the Series 7 CHRONOS, rose to the top of everything the company announced at the trade show. One of the major features of the Series 7 CHRONOS is speed. An Intel Core i7 Quad Core processor and 8GB of additional flash memory, thanks to Express Cache technology, give this laptop incredible performance. Named for the Greek god of time, the CHRONOS notebook does its best to cut down on time across the board. It boasts a startup time of 19 seconds and 30% faster web browsing. While the Series 7 CHRONOS cuts down time, it also extends it in necessary areas. Battery life is a purported 8 hours on a single charge. With Samsung’s Battery Life Plus technology, 80% of the battery’s original capacity will be maintained for up to 1,500 charge cycles. The laptop keeps a slim profile. With a reduced bezel, however, Samsung can fit 15 inch display inside a 14 inch profile. Similarly, a 15.6 inch display fits inside a 15 inch profile. The display is an incredibly vibrant one with SuperBright 300nit brightness, 16 million colors, an anti-reflective screen, and a 1600 x 900 HD+ LCD. The AMD Radeon HD6750M graphics card greatly enhances the viewing experience and matches the Core i7 in terms of performance, especially where games are concerned. It’s hard to find fault with the Series 7 CHRONOS looking at the specs. It packs a lot of power into a small profile. It’s an attractive option for those who don’t want a Mac. The base price will be $999 which goes up to $1,149 with options. The release date is set as October 2, 2011.More at SlashGear and TechConnect read more
Android geeks around the world sit poised to watch in unison as Google and Samsung stream an event live from Hong Kong in just a few hours. The expectation from the crowd is that Google will unveil the latest version of the Android operating system, the phone that will spearhead that OS, and maybe a few other goodies.Like most technology nowadays, most of the details about the phone, dubbed the Galaxy Nexus, have surfaced. These bits and pieces allow us to paint a pretty clear picture of what to expect from Google and Samsung.Galaxy NexiiFirst things first, we are not looking at a single phone. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is actually five different model numbers. GT-I9250, GT-I9250T, GT-I9250M, SC-04D, and SCH-I515.This gaggle of Google-powered Android phones will all be running Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich. Externally, we know that all of these phones will be identical in size: 136.0mm × 68.0mm × 8.8mm at the ends while being 11.5mm at its thickest point. They will all have the dual core Omap4460 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and the 135 gram phones will come with either 16 or 32 GB or storage, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0, and NFC. The 5MP rear facing camera will be able to record 1080p with a 1.3MP front facing camera included as well. The 4.65″ screen will have a 720×1080 resolution powered by Samsung’s Super AMOLED HD technology.Looking at just the numbers, the camera seems a little underwhelming, but since we know nothing about the underlying sensor, we’ll wait and see how nice it actually performs. Otherwise, this is in every way an extremely powerful phone capable of bringing Android 4.0 to the world in a big way.As for the different models, we know that the SCH-I515 will be the Verizon Wireless variant, packing an LTE and EVDO radio on the inside. Sources suggest the GT-I9250 will go to AT&T, while the GT-I9250T will likely go to T-Mobile. There’s not been any confirmation about the GT-I9250M or the SC-04D, but it seems like a Sprint version and an international version would be all that’s needed to tie this release up in a nice global package.PerformanceThis wave of phones is not even out yet, and benchmarks have started showing up. The OpenGL benchmarking test GLBenchmark has recorded a Galaxy Nexus attempting to take the test to see how well the device performed. Now, the screenshot of the test shows nothing about when it was taken, what stage in development the phone was at, or even if GLBenchmark is an accurate tell of performance in Android 4.0. But the results are low compared to many of the current generation Android devices. Time will tell whether or not the device is able to keep up with the rest of the Android devices out there.Android 4.0While we’ve speculated a couple of times as to what the next version of Android will bring to the table, especially with the video leak of Android 4.0 recently, a feature we were not aware of until now was the ability to take screenshots from the device. This feature, which has been sorely missed on Android devices since the beginning, is a welcome addition to the Android ecosystem.Apparently, you just hold down the power button and the volume down button, and the screenshot will be saved to your gallery. This feature alone is often the reason many Android users will root their phones, giving them the ability to take a screenshot through a third party app.Final ThoughtsThis wave of phones will bring about the next version of Android. As it stands right now, Samsung is the only manufacturer who has started to follow the Nexus way of doing things. Most Android phones still come with removable storage, and next to no Android phones come with the NFC chip required for Google Wallet. This line of phones is not an absolute standard, nor its it an influence point for any of the manufacturers at the moment. Now that it seems like the Galaxy Nexus will be made available to a much larger group of customers, it’s possible that the other OEM’s will feel the need to offer similar services and solutions. For now, the Galaxy Nexus seems like the perfect phone for the user who wants the pure Google experience, and is interested in trying out the latest and greatest in Android. Whether or not it will “change the game” has yet to be seen. read more
When it comes to smartphone rumors, the next iPhone is always king of the mountain. But that nebulous Facebook phone pops up pretty frequently, too, and it’s surfaced again thanks to a new report from Bloomberg.According to its sources, Facebook is definitely brining a phone to market and it’s going to arrive by the middle of next year. As pegged by previous rumors, HTC will be responsible for building the Facebook phone. The launch date was reportedly pushed back to allow HTC time to finish brining other devices to market — which would likely include a Windows Phone 8 device in time for its fall arrival. Facebook originally planned to have the phone available this year.As usual, the details provided by Bloomberg’s sources are scant. Beyond the fact that the phone is a go and that HTC is involved, there’s not much to go on. It’s mentioned that a “modified OS” will be used — which almost certainly means a Facebooked version of Android, similar to what Amazon put together for the Kindle Fire.According to analyst Victor Anthony, the first-party phone would allow Facebook to “put a lot of ads onto the platform.” That’s all well and good, but advertisers like GM are struggling to reap the benefits of Facebook advertising right now. Unless Facebook can prove that marketing dollars are well-spent on its platform, the lure of yet another mobile advertising venue might be very limited. What’s probably more important to Facebook is making sure that it’s the default social network on some hot hardware, since mobile use is exploding. Google+ gets the nod on Android, of course, and Twitter snagged the first social integration spot on iOS. It’s crucial, then, for Facebook to position itself front-and-center on someone’s hardware. But whether that means Facebook will gamble on a first-party phone or lobbying friends like Microsoft and HTC for deeper integration on products is still up in the air. This could turn out to be another Cha Cha or Salsa, after all.More at Bloomberg read more

By Andrew Roberts Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article HOMELESS PEOPLE LOOKING for help with mental health difficulties are being doubly hampered by a double whammy of their vulnerable state and bureaucracy.A new report from Mental Health Reform and the Dublin Simon Community found that almost half of participants in their study had mental health issues before they became homeless – but the other half said homelessness sparked their mental ill-health.One participant described the conditions that led to their condition:It takes its toll on your brain like…especially when you’re sleeping in these places where there’s four people to a room…You could have like, an addict in one corner, alcoholic in another corner…and somebody with a serious mental illness in the other corner like, yunno? It’s a volatile situation…It’s not a nice situation to be in…Both users of mental health services and staff members have described administrative difficulties getting in the way of access to services. One participant was turned away from A&E because he couldn’t provide an address because he was living on the streets, while others have to travel to services areas from their last known address which adds the expense of travel. The Homeless Adults Speak Out on Mental Health Group, which was involved in the research of the report, said that there were two main issues that need addressing:Inadequate access to quality crisis mental health support on a 24/7 basisDifficulties getting access to mental health services if you have both an addiction and mental health difficulty. In the experience of some of the study participants, any detection of substance abuse caused their immediate removal from the mental health service and a move to addiction services only.Another participant said:There is that whole dual-diagnosis. I know loads of them, so they will filter you off somewhere else if they think that they smell drink on you, even during the interview, ‘how much do you drink? Do you take tablets?’ That’s it, you’re gone. That’s the problem. This ineligibility to access mental health services meant that the service users’ mental health needs were not given attention despite being a significant factor in their relapses. One service user says:“I think most people just think it’s the tablets and the drink. They don’t realise that there’s issues there. And then when they go in somewhere like a drink detox, a rehab unit, a lot of people go out and they slip, and they’re back again, because they haven’t dealt with what’s going on.”A staff member mentioned that gardai or hospital services refuse to take in service users who express suicidal behaviour if they have an active substance in them due to the Mental Health Act, creating difficulty for workers trying to provide support.Secure and permanent housing, along with regular counselling, aided in helping with the post-traumatic stress of being homeless it was found.Head of Emergency Services in Dublin Simon Community, Claire McSweeney, said:“Bricks and mortar alone will not solve the current homeless crisis and it is very clear that once a person becomes homeless, the deterioration in their physical and mental health can be both rapid and debilitating.“Rapid access to support and specialised care, is vital to ensure that people can address what circumstances brought them to be where they are and provide the emotional supports for them to recover from the detrimental impact of homelessness.”Meet the team taking chronic rough sleepers off the streets of Dublin and giving them their own home> http://jrnl.ie/3445183 Share47 Tweet Email Friday 16 Jun 2017, 6:10 AM read more
The good folks at PBS’ Nature have been capturing stunning imagery of animals for years. These days, some of their best footage is being recorded by creations like this disturbing-looking fellow. This is a sophisticated robo-dog that Nature used to film the activities of wild dogs for their Spy In The Wild series. They dressed him up before dropping him off in the bush, of course. With his fuzzy little dog costume on you’d never guess that there was something that looked like it crawled out of a Scott Cawthon game hiding underneath and waiting to jumpscare you.The disguise certainly seems to be convincing enough. Here, one of the wild pups comes in for a closer look:It’s not just the robodog’s good looks that put his flesh-and-bone friends at ease. His movements — though a bit stiff and understandably animatronic at times — are still authentic enough to maintain the ruse. Thanks to the cool people at Nature, you can take an up-close look at what makes those movements possible:Their shoot with the wild dogs is by no means the first time Spy In The Wild has punked a group of unsuspecting animals. They’ve also sent a crocodile hatchling, prairie dog, bushbaby, cobra and and a bunch of others out to record. They’ve even stashed cameras inside fake penguin eggs and nuts. The results are always fun to watch — especially when an animal figures out that something is amiss. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching a polar bear destroy a camera rig. read more
Genoa football head coach Ivan Juric believes he can see many positivities from Genoa’s 2-2 draw with Udinese, stating that Daniel Bessa and Cristian Romero are for great things.Rodrigo De Paul cleared up for Kevin Lasagna and scored the second goal with a fantastic curler while the Grifone were twice in front at Marassi.“I saw a good team for long periods and we deserved to be more than 1-0 up at half-time, as Udinese didn’t have a shot on goal,” the Coach told Sky Sports Italia via Football Italia.“There are many positives to take from this match. It’s a positive result, considering we were down to 10 men at the end. We know De Paul is dangerous from that distance, so we shouldn’t have let him take the shot in all that space.Serie A Betting: Match-day 3 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Considering there is a number of perfect starts so early in the Serie A season, as well as a few surprisingly not-so perfect ones….“I’ve known Daniel Bessa since he was in the youth team, he has everything it takes to become a great player. He hit the post today and won the penalty, so the future depends on him. He can either keep growing or rest on his laurels.“Cristian Romero was playing with the youth team three weeks ago. The other emerging area, the green economy, while relatively new to Jamaica, also has the potential to facilitate employment and new skill sets. The study defines the green economy “as an economy, which is balanced by growth and a sustainable environment where wastes within one industry become raw materials for another.”Some jobs available within the sector include conservation experts; truck, tractor and heavy duty equipment drivers; chemical engineers; renewable energy engineers; electricians; solar alternative technicians; welders and energy auditors. The document also said that online employment is becoming a trend in Jamaica as persons are becoming more interested in blogging, freelance data entry, webpage design, among others. Meanwhile, jobs in the services sector were the main source of employment for Jamaicans in 2014.According to the document, services accounted for just over 67 per cent of the employed labour force last year, with the wholesale and retail, and repair of motor vehicles and equipment industries, as the top service sector, comprising 20.1 per cent of the labour force. Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing were the largest employers from the Goods Producing sector, with a figure of 18.4 per cent, followed by Producers of Government Services, with a little over 14 per cent.A further breakdown showed that professionals, senior officials and technicians, made up the largest group of workers, with 22.2 per cent, followed by service workers, and shop and market sales workers, who accounted for 19.9 per cent.Sales representatives, security officers, drivers, bartenders and chefs were listed among the “hot” occupations for 2014, based on a review of job advertisements posted in the daily newspapers. The PRMU will be undertaking additional research this year on the National Labour Market, Employment Opportunities in Four Selected Parishes, Canadian Farm Work Programme, Understanding Green Economy and its Prospects for employment in Jamaica, among other focus areas. Credit: Santiago David-Rivera (Phys.org)—A trio of researchers has found and documented the case of a newly hatched bird with plumage that mimics a poisonous caterpillar to ward off predators. In their paper published in American Naturalist, Gustavo Londoño, Duván García and Manuel Sánchez Martínez, describe finding the young birds and observing their habits while in their nests. The flight of the frisky tui The researchers suggest the species has evolved its unique ability because of the low rate of chick survival in the Amazon area in general (approximately 20 percent). Also, it takes the chicks almost three weeks to develop enough to fly, which leaves them extremely vulnerable, as does the nest, which is little more than some leaves pushed into a bowl shape resting on the forest floor. In watching the chicks for a period of time, the researchers found that the ruse appears to work, as the chicks demonstrated a higher than average survival rate for chicks in the Amazon. We describe apparent Batesian mimicry in the morphology and behavior of a Laniocera hypopyrra nestling. On hatching, the nestling had a distinctive bright orange color and modified feathers all over its body, and 6 days after hatching, it started to move its head very slowly from side to side (in a “caterpillar” movement) when disturbed. These traits gave it a resemblance to a hairy, aposematic caterpillar. This species has a long nestling period for its size (20 days), perhaps due to slow provisioning rates (about one feeding per hour). We argue that the slow growth rate, combined with high nest predation, favors the evolution of antipredation mechanisms such as the unique morphological and behavioral characteristics of L. hypopyrra nestlings. Citation: Amazonian bird chicks mimic poisonous caterpillar to avoid detection (2014, December 15) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-12-amazonian-bird-chicks-mimic-poisonous.html This document is subject to copyright. Scientists have discovered a number of creatures that mimic other species to protect themselves from predators, but until now, no evidence for it has been found in birds, (aside from one that makes a noise like a rattlesnake). The team found that cinereous mourner (Laniocera hypopyrra) chicks are born with bright orange coloring that very closely resembles one of two large, hairy toxic caterpillars (Podalia or Megalopyge), and even behave like them while in the nest. The adults, on the other hand, are rather bland with mostly grey feathers. In reality, it’s not just the coloring of the chicks (bright orange down lined with black ridges and tipped white barbs which also serve as camouflage) that is so convincing, it’s also the shape (and size at approximately 14 cm compared to 12 cm for the real caterpillar) and nuances of the feathers—the chicks look so much like the caterpillars that no one until now ever knew about their mimicry. They also act the part, weaving and bobbing to capture the way a caterpillar moves and keeping non-caterpillar looking parts tucked underneath their bodies until their mother comes back (which is only every hour or so, a very long time for birds) with food—but even then, they don’t blow their disguise—they wait for a special signal from the mom letting them know that it’s really safe to reveal their true nature. read more

Recently, officials from Cambodia and India met in Siem Reap to discuss cooperation in the tourism industry as part of a high-level dialogue mechanism. In order to strengthen the tourism ties and to promote India as a destination for Cambodian tourists ‘Incredible India Road Show’ was organised in Phnom Penh.Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India said, “The committee is now working on a strategy to further collaboration between the countries in tourism. Stronger cooperation in tourism will be beneficial for both countries in terms of economic growth and job creation,” she said. The flow of tourists between Cambodia and India has increased remarkably in the last few years, said Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, Cambodia. He said that many Cambodians travel to India to visit religious landmarks, while Indians like to visit the Kingdom to experience local weddings or as part of pilgrimages. “In many ways, both countries have a similar appeal for tourists, and both have huge potential for tourism. This is why we need to boost cooperation with India in the sector,” Khon further added. Both the ministers laid emphasis on conducting talks with civil aviation bodies to expedite the creation of a direct air link.Chhay Sivlin, President, Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, said the committee has been hugely successful in strengthening ties between the countries, and may soon succeed in creating the first direct flight between Phnom Penh and New Delhi.“India is a popular new destination for Cambodians. We are now working on new tour packages in India to offer our clients,” Sivlin said.Manika Jain, India’s Ambassador to Cambodia, pointed out that India has a lot to offer beyond religious tourism. “India is now a leading destination for medical tourism, and Cambodians have already started visiting India for medical check-ups and treatment,” she said.
