first_imgSALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say an avalanche killed four skiers and injured four others in a popular recreation area, making it one of the deadliest avalanches in Utah history. The Unified Police Department told local media that it was alerted to the avalanche about 11:40 a.m. Saturday after receiving a faint distress call from an avalanche beacon in Millcreek Canyon. The department says all eight skiers had avalanche beacons. The survivors were able to dig themselves out of the snow and ice, but their medical conditions are unknown at this time. The survivors were also able to locate and dig out the other four, but they had already died.last_img read more

Report Reply 0 replies · active 294 weeks ago +2 Vote up Vote down Ted Logan · 294 weeks ago TCU blew a 21 point lead in 10 minutes to a team with the softest no-conference schedule in all of college football. They also nearly lost to both WVU and KU. Putting them in the championship game would have been a joke. I can’t believe someone who claims to have a shred of sports knowledge would think TCU belongs in a 4-team playoff. Report Reply 0 replies · active 294 weeks ago +2 Vote up Vote down Ted Logan · 294 weeks ago “It is possible for a basketball school to have a decent football team.” KU has a better all-time winning %, more consensus all-americans, played in more bowl games, and has a better bowl winning % than Duke. The Ducks are explosive and they have talent. This game could get into the 50s. My pick: Oregon. Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. Ohio State – Never thought I would see the day that I would be cheering so avidly for a Nick Saban Alabama team. But I would like to see an annihilation of mammoth proportions just to prove that Ohio State’s inclusion in the new playoffs was a blunder by a politically driven committee that only sees things in white and money green. My pick: Alabama.College Football National Championship (worth 5 points) – Alabama vs. Oregon will clearly be a battle between the two best programs of the past five years. Saban has a chance of winning four national championships in six years, and he knows how to win the big games. Oregon has yet to win a crown but Mariota has been unstoppable in the Pac 10. I’m going with Oregon in a double-overtime upset and this will be the start of the gradual implementation of an eight-team playoff. My pick: Oregon. Follow us on Twitter. Commentary by Tracy McCue — A day late, dollar short.  Must be Christmas time…Last week was a bad one, Wellington. But this one is going to be a heck of a lot better. And what better way to open the week with a completely irrelevant, nonsensical, pathetic attempt on my part to tell you how to pick the College Bowls for the fourth annual 2014-15 Sumner Newscow-TheDore College Bowl Contest.Remember you need to get your entries to The Dore or postmarked to me by Dec. 24 (print off entry here: 2014-15 Bowl Contest). Winner gets $100, which, knowing the way some of you have spent money over the holiday is much needed. And the great thing I’ve noticed about bowl picking: it’s kind of like how the Kansas Legislature puts together a budget – a complete crap shoot devoid of reason or logic. So as a community service to you, I’m providing my handy dandy cheat sheet on who to pick this holiday season. The key to winning this contest is to pick the opposite of what I suggest, because when it comes to bowl games, my track record is pretty bad.Let’s start with the lesser bowls and then work our way to the TCU-got-screwed-over, I-mean College-Football-Playoffs in the end. Heart of Dallas Bowl — Illinois vs. Louisiana. I first thought it said Fart of Dallas since that would be an appropriate description for this worthless bowl. Fighting Illini haven’t played in a bowl game since 2011. They will wish that streak would have continued after playing this one: My pick: Louisiana Tech.Sun Bowl — Arizona State vs. Duke. KU should take notice. It is possible for a basketball school to have a decent football team. The latest Jayhawk hire of David Beaty as coach appears to be a sound one because of his recruiting ties to Texas. It’s all about Johnnies and Joes not X’s and O’s as the saying go. My pick: Duke.Duck Commander Bowl — Miami vs. South Carolina. This is actually the Independence Bowl but I love the fact that the Duck Commander crew has taken over the reigns. Perhaps, Uncle Si could lose the trophy or something. Miami University, the U, is good for one thing — 30 for 30 specials. My pick: South Carolina:Pinstripe Bowl — Boston College and Penn State. I’m still not over that unsportsmanlike penalty for the salute made by a K-State player that screwed the Cats out of a bowl victory in this bowl about five years ago. My therapist keeps telling me to get a life. My pick: Penn State.Holiday Bowl — Nebraska vs. USC. Or maybe we should call it the @#$%@ Bowl in honor of former head football coach Bo Pelini, who gave his players a profanity laced good-bye speech after getting canned by the Nebraska administration. People should be nervous of taking a team of a fired coach in a bowl game. My pick: USC.Liberty Bowl – Texas A&M vs. West Virginia. Or “One Big 12 school replaces the other” Bowl. West Virginia slipped in nicely to the vacant spot left by the Aggies, who ran from the Big 12 because they couldn’t stand Texas. This bowl is about Big 12 pride. My pick: West Virginia.Russell Athletic Bowl – Oklahoma vs. Clemson. Tough year for the Sooners. Potential National Champions to playing in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Sooner faithful are in a not-so-happy mood with beloved Bob Stoops. He’ll get a victory here. My pick: Oklahoma. Texas Bowl – Arkansas vs. Texas. This is a blast from the past between these old Southwest Conference rivals. Arkansas is on a roll, but Texas is slowly becoming something under that new coach Charlie Strong, who is a no non-sense Sheriff kind of guy. My pick: Texas.Music City Bowl – Notre Dame vs. LSU. I actually went to a Notre Dame game this year. For all its lore, you would think Notre Dame Stadium would actually have room for someone to sit. LSU should have enough horses to win this one. My pick: LSU.Belk Bowl – Georgia vs. Louisville. Or is that the “balaack” bowl as in throwing up in a bowl having to watch this game. When in doubt go with SEC. My pick: Georgia. Foster Farms Bowl  – Maryland vs. Stanford – On Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. are you are really going to sit down and watch this game? You might be officially dead. My pick: Stanford. Peach Bowl – Mississippi vs. TCU. Let’s see TCU loses one game and it’s to Baylor. Baylor loses to West Virginia. Ohio State loses below .500 Virginia Tech, and come to think about it, who did Florida State actually beat? TCU quarterback Trevor Boykin needs to explode on this Southeast Conference reject to prove to the world, they were screwed over a Final Four finish. My pick: TCU.Fiesta Bowl – Boise State vs. Arizona. I have always had a soft spot for the Broncos who used a hook-and-lateral, halfback pass and Statute of Liberty trick play to upset Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl – perhaps the greatest bowl game in history. Got to keep giving them some love. My pick: Boise State.Orange Bowl – Mississippi State vs. Georgia Tech. I was kind of pulling for the Bulldogs for awhile this year, hoping that it could upset the apple cart in the SEC. But the year-ending losses derailed their season. Look for Georgia Tech to win this one. Those who have been in the national championship hunt and don’t accomplish the feat, usually stink it up in a lesser bowl (hopefully that won’t happen to TCU). My pick: Georgia Tech. Outback Bowl – Auburn vs. Wisconsin. The Badgers lose to Ohio State 59-0 (by the way the Big 12 thanks you for your help – not). And then their coach splits for Oregon State – not Oregon, mind you – Oregon State. Tough month in Wisconsin. But they still have the Packers. My pick: Auburn.Cotton Bowl: Baylor vs. Michigan State – I think the ultimate matchup would have been a rematch of Baylor vs. TCU in a “Screwed over” Bowl. I loved Baylor coach Art Briles’ feisty press conference after his Bears were left out of the playoffs. That guy has some spunk. My pick: Baylor.Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl: Missouri vs. Minnesota. Gopher coach Jerry Kill grew up in Cheney and graduated from Southwestern College – the first in his family to do so. His story is a neat one. He started at Saginaw Valley State, went to Emporia State and eventually ended up at Minnesota. Kill has suffered from kidney cancer and yet continues to flourish as a coach. My pick: Minnesota.Armed Forces Bowl: Houston vs. Pittsburgh. Some are thinking the Houston Cougars will be part of the Big 12 expansion. Not sure if they bring that much to the table. My pick: Houston.Taxslayer Bowl: Iowa vs. Tennessee – Remember when these two schools were actually relevant and we cared about them? Me, neither. My pick: Tennessee. Alamo Bowl: Kansas State vs. UCLA – Should be a good one. This will be a matchup of two outstanding quarterbacks: Jake Waters at K-State and Brett Hundley of UCLA. If the Cats can win this one they would have three 10-win seasons in four years. Last year, Snyder got that Bowl Monkey off his back against Michigan. My pick: Kansas State.Cactus Bowl: Washington vs. Oklahoma State. I liked the Pokes spunk against Oklahoma. Not sure what all the rumbling was about with Mike Gundy losing his job or moving to greener pastures. O-State fans need to worship the ground this guy walks on, because they weren’t much before him, and may not be much without him since. My pick: Oklahoma State.Birmingham Bowl: East Carolina vs. Florida. Who cares? My pick: Florida.last_img read more

Game Day Preview: Pittsburgh Steelers at NY Jets

first_imgNew York Jets quarterback Geno Smith walks off the field after the second half of an NFL football game against the Atlanta Falcons, Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, in Atlanta. The New York Jets won 30-28. (AP Photo/David Goldman)It’s been two weeks since the Steelers took the field and lost their fourth consecutive game to open the 2013 campaign. Two weeks to stew, two weeks to think about what’s gone wrong and two week to prepare for the surprising 3-2 NY Jets. The Steelers still say they think they are in the race, that they have a chance to win enough games and they still have the talent on the team to run off a win streak. Mike Tomlin says he’s going to turn it around. After having two weeks off and facing a team coming off a short week, we’ll learn everything about this version of the black and gold and how much hear they have. Here are the keys to a Steelers victory:They can’t panic if they get down in the game. Losing is infectious and the Steelers need to stop the bleeding here. The last thing they can afford is to panic if they are losing and assume the game is over just because they haven’t won yet. They can’t try to get the whole season back with this game. If they try to do too much they’ll fail to do anything at all. They need to play to their strengths and expose the Jets weaknessesThe defense must get after Geno Smith and force him into bad throws and perhaps even intercept a ball or two. They must instill fear in the rookie quarterback and prevent him from gaining any confidence at all.LeVeon Bell must be able to run the ball against a very tenacious Jets defense. Ball control will be pivotal. Here are a Few Things to Watch:Kelvin Beachum – He’s been given the nod to start at left tackle for the now benched Mike Adams. Will he step into the role and hold it or will he be another issue on the line?Levi Brown- Sticking with the line, will the newly acquired Brown play a big role in the hopeful resurrection of the worst unit on the team? If so, what will that role be and how big will it be?Cam Heyward-Keeping with the theme of the new changes, how will Cam Heyward step in as the new starter at left defensive end replacing Ziggy Hood? The overall play of the team – Will they come out hungry or will they continue to look like one of the worst teams in the league. Having two weeks off to prep for this game means they better come out with ferocity and show they have some heart.Mike Pelaia hosts the website Steel Nation Association www.steelnationassociation.com- Covering the Steelers and helping Children’s Hospital All Day Everyday.
