Cost of Football in 1949
In a previous blog I mentioned that Batesville felt they needed $5,000 to start the football program. Here are some of the individual costs that they encountered. It took $100 to put one player on the field. This added up to the $3,500 itself. Individual costs were: Helmet was $8.95, shoes were $13.90, pads cost $7.85, and the jerseys cost $4.00. You need to realize that there were also pants, socks, coaches would have received a small stipend, there would have been practice equipment, etc. For instance, a football cost $13.45.All students were allowed in the games free. It would be difficult today with our high costs to allow free entrance. Adults back then paid $1.00. In today’s world a Ridell helmet would cost nearly $400. Cheaper helmets would not meet the safety standards.I forgot to mention earlier a point of interest for the ladies. The first homecoming queen was Barb Biehle! Many thanks to Bill Hisrich for supplying the information!!
