Mumbai: Hiranandani Group’s energy arm H-Energy Gateway Private Ltd. launched India’s first floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU)-based LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal at Jaigarh port in the State. The FSRU, inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis earlier this week will be operational by end of 2018 and will supply re-gasified LNG to customers through a 60 km pipeline which will be connected to national gas grid at Dhabol.Highlighting India’s growing need for LNG, Mr. Fadnavis said, “I am confident that the availability of LNG will spur industrialisation. It will bring in more industries, and the fact that the JSW port is operational for all 12 months (as opposed to the Dhabol port that is open only for 6 months) will help in cutting losses.”The company has received approval to lay and operate a 635 km natural gas pipeline from Jaigarh to Mangalore and will be connected to the demand centres of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Goa, Karwar, Udupi, and Mangalore. The pipeline is expected to be commissioned by 2019.The 4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) LNG terminal will offer storage, re-gasification, re-loading, fuel bunkering and truck loading facilities to cater to the growing energy demand of Indian industries. The company also has plans to set up a second FSRU at the Digha region, Bay of Bengal, scheduled for 2020, said a company statement. Mr. Darshan Hiranandani, CEO, H-Energy said, “The terminal will help strengthen the transport infrastructure within Ratnagiri. So far the local gas distributor Unison hasn’t built a single CNG pump as the gas used to be so expensive.” H-Energy said it would also be supplementing Unison’s efforts to provide gas connections to over 1.5 lakh homes in Ratnagiri district in the next three years. The Jaigarh Port is owned and operated by JSW Infrastructure (the maritime infrastructure development arm of the $ 12 billion JSW Group).“In the near future, Jaigarh Port is getting ready for a giant leap to handle 80 mtpa of cargo and is aiming for direct berthing of next generation vessels i.e. large dry bulk carrier (Vale Max), LNG carrier (Q-Max), large container vessels (EEE Series) and very large crude carriers. This LNG terminal will enable development of local port-based industries in Maharashtra region,” said Capt. BVJK Sharma, Joint Managing Director & CEO, JSW Infrastructure.
The Aam Aadmi Party and the Jannayak Janta Party on Friday formed an alliance for the Lok Sabha election in Haryana and announced that the latter would contest seven of the 10 seats in the State. The distribution of constituencies and the names of the candidates would be declared later. The JJP was launched in December 2018 by Dushyant Chautala, grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. Making the announcement at a joint press conference on Friday, Mr. Dushyant Chautala said it would be a long-term alliance and the two parties will fight together in the Haryana Assembly elections as well. The decision came two days after AAP called off discussions for an alliance with the Congress as the latter was not ready to give AAP seats in Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana. “People of Haryana wanted this. Congratulations to the people of Haryana. Together, we will defeat BJP and work for development of Haryana,” AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet. Coordination panel Mr. Dushyant Chautala said a coordination committee has been formed with members of both the parties and it will decide within the next two-three days on the seats on which the parties will contest. “Jhadoo and chappal will come together to overthrow them from the area,” Mr. Chautala said in a veiled attack at the Congress and the BJP. He termed it an alliance of “aam” (common) and “jan” (people). read more
Samajwadi Party’s (SP) State chief Abu Azmi faces a stiff contest in his stronghold of Mankhurd-Shivajinagar this time. Giving the two-term Member of the Legislative Assembly from the area a tough fight this time is the Shiv Sena’s Vitthal Lokare. Mr. Lokare recently quit the Congress to join the Sena and has a following among the area’s Marathi population. However, the majority Muslim population may not vote for the saffron party and may give Mr. Azmi a third term. One of the city’s most underdeveloped areas, the Mankhurd-Shivajinagar constituency consists of housing societies, chawls and sprawling slums in Shivaji Nagar, Rafiq Nagar, Bainganwadi, and parts of Deonar. The slums consist of pucca or makeshift multistoreyed structures in the area’s narrow lanes, which have seen incidents of fire or building collapses in the past. The residents also face acute water shortage as most either do not have a legal water connection, or the existing ones do not receive water. This leads to people having to buy water at exorbitant rates.“People spend a large amount every month on simply buying water. Before the previous Assembly election, Abu Azmi said he would resolve the area’s water problem, but five years on, the problem persists. Some people even use creek water, and that leads to health issues,” said Mumtaz Shaikh, an activist associated with the M-East Project and Right to Pee campaign. “Besides, children do not have a playground or open spaces. At Rajiv Gandhi maidan, Mr. Azmi first made a dispensary, then a gym and party office. Now, we don’t even get entry,” she said. Traffic congestion is another major issue in the area. “The biggest problem plaguing the area is drug abuse. Schoolgoing children are consuming drugs with the police not being able to do anything. The other problem is the Deonar dumping ground. People of this area are fighting for the closure of this ground for years as it causes severe respiratory diseases. There is a plant here that processes biomedical waste. The fumes lead to severe health issues,” said Yusuf Siddiqui, a resident of Shivaji Nagar. In 2014, the area had 3.09 lakh voters, but just 1.27 lakh cast their votes. Abu Azmi got 41,719 votes while the Sena’s Suresh Patil won 31,782 votes. In 2009, the area had 1.14 lakh voters. Mr. Azmi won 38,435 votes against the Congress’s Syed Ahmed, who got 24,318 votes.Mr. Azmi is the State president of the SP; known for his controversial statements. He was recently trying for an alliance with the Congress-NCP in Maharashtra but the talks fell through. The SP is now contesting on its own. Mr. Lokare is a three-term corporator from the Shivaji Nagar. He left the Shiv Sena along with Narayan Rane and joined the Congress. Around a month ago, Mr. Lokare returned to the Sena while Mr. Rane recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mr. Lokare’s wife is also a former corporator. Mr Lokare faced initial hiccups when former Sena corporator Suresh Patil also filed his nomination to contest the election as an independent but retracted his application. The Congress’s Sufiyan Wanu too filed his nomination but retracted it. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) has not fielded anyone from the area while the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has fielded Suraiya Shaikh. According to his affidavit, Mr. Azmi has 10 first information reports against him including criminal cases and breach of model code of conduct. He has declared assets worth around ₹200 crore, making him one of the richest candidates in Maharashtra. Mr. Lokare has declared assets totalling ₹1.3 crore. He has no criminal cases against him. read more
