Samsung’s 2017 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, was launched in India last year at around Rs 58,000. Around 14 months later, the smartphone can now be found for as low as Rs 38,000 on Paytm Mall. While the phone is actually listed at Rs 45,990, Paytm Mall is throwing in a cashback of Rs 8,000 as well via a promo code, which effectively brings the price of the Galaxy S8 down to Rs 37,990. This sounds like a pretty sweet deal considering all that tha flagship phone has to offer. There are a number of things to love about a phone that brings a near bezel-less Infinity Display along with top-notch hardware as well as some stellar cameras. At Rs 38,000, the Galaxy S8 sounds like a steal, or at least it would have been a clear choice for many had it been a few months ago. But now, the phone falls in the same segment as the OnePlus 6, which was launched in India a few weeks ago at an even lower price point of Rs 34,999. You also have the Honor 10, which is even more affordable at Rs 32,999. These are the phones Samsung’s Galaxy S8 will be competing against and here’s what you need to know.– The Galaxy S8 comes with a gorgeous design that includes curved glass on the front and back and a display that stretches edge-to-edge. Its probably one of the best designed phones in a while (carried forward by the Galaxy S9) and also comes in a compact form factor that makes it feel extremely good to hold. The OnePlus 6 also features an all-glass design, but its bigger and doesn’t quite match the Galaxy S8’s aesthetics. The Honor 10 comes with an aurora glass back is able to reflect light, resulting in a psychedelic colour scheme that looks stunning and is probably the closest to taking on the Galaxy S8 in the design depratment.advertisement– Out of the three phones, the Galaxy S8 is the only one to sport a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, which means colours look vivid and punchy and the deep blacks look great as well. The OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 only manage to bring Full HD+ displays, which may sound a bit disappointing on paper, but real-world usage will not disappoint. All three phones offer bright and vivid displays, but the Galaxy S8 probably gets an edge (quite literally) thanks to Samsung’s excellent panel. — That being said, the OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 come with notches that allow for a larger screen real estate, which may attract some consumers out there who prefer the 2018 industry trend. The Galaxy S8’s Infinity Display comes with symmetrical, narrow bezels on the top and bottom, which would please consumers looking for an affordable notch-less flagship right now.– The Galaxy S8 also comes with some really great cameras that outclass the OnePlus 6 and the Honor 10. The 12-megapixel ‘dual-pixel’ rear camera with f/1.7 aperture takes some great pictures in broad daylight and also does well in low-light and the same can be said about the front camera as well. At the time, the phone could easily take on the cameras on the Pixel and iPhone 7.– The OnePlus 6, on the other hand, doesn’t fall in the same ballpark as the Galaxy S8 when it comes to photography. OnePlus flagship manages to capture good shots outdoors with good colours and detail, but the phone fails in low-light conditions. Meanwhile, the Honor 10 gets a lot of AI help thanks to its chipset which helps capture better photos compared to the OnePlus 6. But the Honor 10 is only as good as its price tag and doesn’t come close to the Galaxy S8.– While the Galaxy S8 looks stunning and comes with exceptional cameras, the biggest issue with the flagship is its software. The phone was launched with Android 7.0 Nougat-based TouchWiz UI and received the Oreo update only a few months ago. While Samsung’s skin is a lot better compared to the olden days, it still comes with a lot of duplicate apps, which can start to weigh down the phone after a while.– The OnePlus 6 is the closest to stock Android among the three and offers an exceptionally smooth and responsive UI with a very light OxygenOS skin on top. It also ships with Oreo out-of-the-box and is guaranteed to get Android P in the future and possibly Android Q as well. The same cannot be said of the Galaxy S8, unfortunately, and timely security updates are also going to be an issue here, especially now that the phone has aged. Even the Honor 10 ships with Android 8.1 Oreo-based EMUI 8.1 which is pretty cluttered and confusing. So as far as latest, clutter-free and secure Android software goes, the OnePlus 6 takes the cake.advertisement — A good chipset is what drives the overall experience and the Galaxy S8 does come with last years flagship chipset – Exynos 8895. While not a Snapdragon SoC, the Exynos chip makes the Galaxy S8 feel smooth and is quite capable of handling intensive tasks. But we are in 2018 now and the chipset inevitably will be compared to the likes of the newer Snapdragon 845 that powers the OnePlus 6. In this battle, a dated chip like the Exynos 8895 will start to wane. The OnePlus 6 is the cheapest smartphone in India to sport the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset, making it a stellar option at Rs 34,999.– The OnePlus 6 is ridiculously fast and performs smoothly no matter what you throw at it. Whether it is graphic intensive games or multitasking, the OnePlus 6 will breeze through anything and a lot of the credit also goes to how well optimised the software and chipset are. The Honor 10 with a Kirin 970 chipset is also a snappy performer, but even this falls a little short of the Snapdragon 845 SoC.– The 3,000mAh battery inside the Galaxy S8 will make you want more after a day full of intensive usage. On an average, the phone should get you through the day but on other days you may find yourself reaching for the charger twice. The Honor 10 is also pretty much on the same boat here. Despite a larger 3,400mAh battery, the Honor 10 will find it difficult to go beyond a day. Again, its the OnePlus 6 that really manages battery life extremely well, promising a good day and a half worth of battery life even with intensive use.– In conclusion, the Galaxy S8 at Rs 38,000 is a fantastic deal if what you’re looking for is a stellar design, a gorgeous Quad HD+ display and exceptional cameras. But when it comes to software, chipset and battery life, the OnePlus 6 and Honor 10 are the better options and they also come in cheaper as well.ALSO READ: Is this Samsung Galaxy S10? Facebook A photo of Ryan Gosling smirking at the Oscars was one indelible image that emerged from the chaos of the best-picture mix-up this year — and the La La Land star has revealed what was behind his amused expression. The Canadian actor was standing alongside the film’s creative team onstage after their film was announced as winner of best picture when “people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt,” he said, describing the moment as “surreal.”“I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head … and then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing,” he said. Ohio State men’s golf sophomore Grant Weaver is no stranger to recognition from the Big Ten Conference, and he received another honor after earning the Big Ten Golfer of the Week. Weaver, last season’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was named the conference’s Golfer of the Week after his performance in this week’s Marshall Invitational. Weaver said he is happy to be recognized. “It’s a nice honor to have,” Weaver said. “I am pretty sure that’s the first time I have gotten that kind of honor.” Weaver had a career-best outing at the Marshall Invitational, posting a 54-hole score of 209. Weaver started his first round Monday with a career-low round of 68, which he followed up with a 69 in the second round. Weaver posted a 72 in the final round and his team-best score in the tournament helped OSU finish the tournament tied for second. “I putted pretty well and I managed my game well,” Weaver said. “I tried to keep from having bogeys and dig holes.” The sophomore was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season , but he said he worked on improving his game during the off-season. “What I have been working on most over the past year has been my swing, and especially my tee shots because that’s what has hurt me when I have been out of play,” Weaver said. “I have been working on trying to hit more fairways and greens and get myself in a good position.” Coach Donnie Darr said Weaver worked hard on improving over the off-season and is seeing improvement. “The big thing for Grant is that he has really worked hard over the last year,” Darr said. “Especially on the fundamentals of his golf swing, he is a much better ball striker and has always had the ability to shoot good scores, and he is now hitting so many more quality shots that his game has taken the next step.” Fellow teammate, sophomore Boo Timko, also commented on Weaver’s individual strengths. “He finished pretty well in the tournament and he was our highest finisher,” Timko said. “I think just his biggest strength is his ability to be able to make putters from anywhere.” With one tournament played this season, Weaver said this season he wants to improve and hopes the team advances far. “I just want to improve on last year, last year was all right for me, I got to play most of the year, which is good for a freshman,” Weaver said. “I hope we make it to nationals this year.” read more

0 Now playing: Watch this: Mobile World Congress 2019 Tags But last year was the first time since 2014 that Zuckerberg didn’t make hold his Monday night keynote speech at the conference. Instead, he left junior executives to host private meetings tucked away in hidden corners of the convention center. You can expect more of the latter this time around. Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise cameo at a Samsung launch event in 2016. Those were simpler times. CNET It’s easy to see why Facebook would want to walk on eggshells. Just weeks after last year’s MWC, the social network found itself caught up in the worst scandal in its 10-year history after the revelation that Cambridge Analytica had exploited the data of 87 million users. The company’s presence at the European show comes as it faces a new antitrust battle in Germany, along with continued concerns about privacy and company culture. Facebook faces the challenge of trying to get its message of connectivity heard above the noise of the troubles that continue to dog the company. Facebook’s connectivity push In August, Facebook collected its various initiatives to bring more people online under a new banner, Facebook Connectivity, and hired Dan Rabinovitsj as vice president to lead this part of the company. In accordance with the trend that’s established over past MWC shows, we’re expecting to hear more about this mission. But even Facebook’s attempts to improve internet connectivity around the world have come under fire, seen as dressing up self interest as philanthropy. Helping more people get online is in the company’s interests, as it expands the number of people who can potentially use its services. Programs such as its Free Basics initiative, which brought people with basic phones a cheaper, pared-down version of the internet, raised net neutrality concerns. At MWC 2016, Zuckerberg attempted to move the company past the Free Basics controversy and announced an initiative to enhance the web’s underlying infrastructure — the Telecom Infra Project (TIP). This is effectively an engineering project that involves network companies such as Nokia and Ericsson, as well global telecoms providers including Orange and Telefonica collaborating on solutions for major connectivity challenges. In the past its announcements at the show “have generally focused on its efforts to grow its audience in less mature mobile first markets,” said IHS Markets analyst Jack Kent over email. “These type of deals involved partnerships with network operators, but also required Facebook to attempt a fine balance between promoting its own services and broader internet access.” Getting into 5G The past two MWCs have given us updates on this project, and we can expect more of the same year, even if Facebook takes more of a backseat than in the past. “As more partners have become involved in TIP, Facebook has somewhat scaled back its presence but it is still a key player here,” said Kent. “In terms of what to expect for MWC, 5G — as with everything else — will likely be a focus for TIP and expect to see work on the more advanced mmWave technologies.” Facebook did not respond to request for comment about its MWC activities, but an events page on the TIP website gives us some clues. Most TIP panels and demos are scheduled to take place in Facebook’s own private event space at the show, with topics including its high-speed millimeter wave project and “developing the Wi-Fi ecosystem,” as well as a new, unnamed project that will be announced at the show, “which will focus on an exciting aspect of future 5G networks.” Beyond connectivity, a number of other notable Facebook employees will also be repping the company at MWC. They include Nicola Mendelsohn, vice president of the European business, who is due to address startups at the 4YFN side conference on Tuesday, and Yann LeCun, Facebook’s chief AI scientist, who will speak on a panel on Monday. It’s easy to get lost in the scrum when there are so many top tech companies competing to be heard at MWC, but it pays to look closely at those who are trying to build and underpin the backbone of the entire internet. Facebook is one of those companies, so keep your eyes peeled this week, as we’ll be bringing you all the latest news about its announcements straight from the show floor. But look a little closer and you’ll see Facebook at MWC 2019. No, it’s not launching a phone — HTC tried that with the Facebook button-rocking ChaCha back at MWC 2011 with little success. Instead, it will likely continue to press an issue that’s long been a priority for the company: improving internet access and getting more people on its social network. 17May Howell lauds House approval of bill to protect Michigan deer from disease Legislation prohibits import of carcasses with chronic wasting diseaseWith a show of unanimous bipartisan support, the Michigan House of Representatives has approved legislation to protect Michigan deer from the spread of chronic wasting disease.State Rep. Gary Howell, R-North Branch, chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, said limiting people from bringing carcasses of deer, elk and other cervids into Michigan from areas where chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected will help prevent the disease from spreading.“Chronic wasting disease, which spreads easily and kills every deer it infects, has decimated deer populations in other states,” said Howell. “It’s critically important to take every precaution we can to prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease here before it’s too late.”Howell said maintaining a healthy deer herd is important, as deer hunting generates more than $2.3 billion each year for Michigan’s economy. The state has more than 650,000 deer hunters who have harvested an average of 430,000 deer annually during the past decade, and deer hunting contributes more than 10 million days of recreation every year.In North America, two Canadian provinces and 24 states, including Michigan, have found chronic wasting disease. In 2015, a deer in Ingham County was found to be infected with the disease, and additional infected deer have been found in surrounding areas since that time.A CWD management zone has been established, consisting of Clinton, Ingham, Shiawassee, Eaton and Ionia counties. Baiting and feeding is illegal in the zone, and hunters there should be sure to properly dispose of the leftover parts in their garbage or a landfill. Leftover parts from an infected deer, especially heads and backbones, contain CWD prions and if discarded on the landscape those prions can persist for decades.Howell said it is important to understand how the disease is spread, and adhere to a chronic wasting disease management plan to prevent it from spreading.“We must protect the environment if we want to continue the Michigan hunting tradition,” he said. The disease can be transmitted through animal-to-animal contact or through a contaminated environment. Studies have shown that CWD prions exist in the saliva, urine, blood and feces of infected animals. Additionally, a study from the University of Wisconsin suggests that the CWD prion can remain indefinitely in certain types of soil, and binding to soil dramatically increases the infectiousness of CWD prions.“Bringing a diseased carcass into Michigan could contaminate the environment and cause chronic wasting disease to spread through our healthy deer population,” Howell said. “All hunters should understand the risks and refrain from this activity, and anyone who does should be sanctioned.”House Bill 4424 would increase the penalties for illegally bringing a deer carcass into Michigan to a fine between $500 and $2,000. The bill would exempt the hides, deboned meat, finished taxidermy products, cleaned teeth, antlers or antlers attached to a skullcap cleaned of brain and muscle tissue from this penalty. The bill now advances to the Senate for consideration.### Categories: Howell News read more

The UK has completed its eight-year long digital switchover process with the switch-off of analogue transmissions in Northern Ireland today.John Cresswell, CEO of transmission services provider Arqiva was joined at Belfast’s Divis transmitter site by Olympic pentathlete Mary Peters to turn off the last remaining analogue transmitter.UK media and communications regulator Ofcom has welcomed the successful completion of digital switchover and said that the way is now clear for the process of auctioning digital dividend spectrum to enable the delivery of 4G mobile services.Ofcom will begin the process of auctioning digital dividend spectrum at the end of this year.“The UK’s switchover to digital has been a huge success. Not only has is created more TV choice for consumers, it has also freed up vital capacity that will be used to deliver mobile broadband services to 98% of cities, towns and villages across the UK,” said Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards. “Now that switchover is complete, Ofcom is looking forward to delivering the 4G auction as the next step in delivering new higher speed mobile broadband services.” The completion of switchover in Northern Ireland marked the end of an eight-year process to migrate UK terrestrial broadcasting to digital.Ofcom cited BARB figures to show that TV viewing had increased from three hours 34 minutes in 2002 to four hours today, while the number of channels broadcast in 2002 was 236, compared with 523 today. The average number of TV sets per household, however, has fallen from 2.03 in 2002 to 1.92 today. In 2012, according to Ofcom’s technology tracker, 70% of UK homes owned an HD-ready TV set, while 5% own a Smart TV.
