The Aam Aadmi Party and the Jannayak Janta Party on Friday formed an alliance for the Lok Sabha election in Haryana and announced that the latter would contest seven of the 10 seats in the State. The distribution of constituencies and the names of the candidates would be declared later. The JJP was launched in December 2018 by Dushyant Chautala, grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. Making the announcement at a joint press conference on Friday, Mr. Dushyant Chautala said it would be a long-term alliance and the two parties will fight together in the Haryana Assembly elections as well. The decision came two days after AAP called off discussions for an alliance with the Congress as the latter was not ready to give AAP seats in Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana. “People of Haryana wanted this. Congratulations to the people of Haryana. Together, we will defeat BJP and work for development of Haryana,” AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet. Coordination panel Mr. Dushyant Chautala said a coordination committee has been formed with members of both the parties and it will decide within the next two-three days on the seats on which the parties will contest. “Jhadoo and chappal will come together to overthrow them from the area,” Mr. Chautala said in a veiled attack at the Congress and the BJP. He termed it an alliance of “aam” (common) and “jan” (people).

Third-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza was knocked out in the second round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday in a shocking 7-5, 6-4 upset by 48th-ranked Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia. (Death of glamour at US Open: No Maria Sharapova, no Ana Ivanovic)The French Open champion has never found the same success on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts as she has on Parisian clay, where she claimed her first grand slam title in May by beating Serena Williams in the final. In four visits to the U.S. Open, the 22-year-old Spaniard has failed to get past the second round.Muguruza came into the year’s final grand slam with a chance to knock Serena Williams from the top spot in world rankings if she could win the U.S. Open, but once again was unable to find her footing in New York. The Spaniard, however, did not go down without a fight.Serving for a spot in the third round at 5-1, Sevastova had two match points but could not convert as Muguruza registered the break to keep her hopes alive.Muguruza continued to close the gap by holding serve at love then breaking the crumbling Latvian a second time to get the set back on serve. With the match slipping away and the crowd at the massive Arthur Ashe Stadium court buzzing, Sevastova steeled her nerves collecting one more service break with a forehand crosscourt winner for the biggest win of her career.”I was shaking a little bit at the end,” admitted 26-year-old Sevastova. “A night match on Ashe. PORT ST. LUCIE— Infielder Ruben Tejada has been released by the New York Mets, who decided he was superfluous.New York announced the moved Wednesday. Tejada will receive $491,803, which is 30 days’ termination pay, rather than the $3 million salary under the contract he agreed to on Jan. 15.Tejada signed with the Mets in 2006 and spent parts of six big league seasons with New York. But after the Mets offered him a contract on Dec. 2, they signed free-agent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and acquired second baseman Neil Walker from Pittsburgh. With Wilmer Flores also on the roster, Tejada’s future with the team became uncertain. He hit .261 with 23 doubles, three homers and 28 RBIs last year. Bernardo Silva Why Man City are yet to see the best of ‘bargain’ Bernardo Silva Sam Lee Last updated 1 year ago 20:15 11/24/17 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(3) Getty Images Manchester City Raheem Sterling Guardiola İ. Gündoğan Kevin De Bruyne Sergio Agüero Yaya Touré Leroy Sané Premier League City coaches have been impressed with the playmaker’s individual talent but believe he is taking a while to learn Pep Guardiola’s specific principles Manchester City were very pleased with themselves at the start of the summer. Within days of the end of last season they had agreed deals for two key figures in the Pep Guardiola revolution, and they were letting people know about it.Were it not for a journalist happening to board the same flight to Manchester as Bernardo Silva, City would have had the bonus of becoming the first club in years to pull off a major transfer without the press getting wind of it. With Silva in the bag, they quickly reached a breakthrough in their pursuit of Benfica goalkeeper Ederson, and were it not for a paperwork issue he would’ve signed the other side of the weekend. Not a bad start to a crucial transfer window, and certainly a statement of intent.Yet it was the money spent that most pleased City officials. They were keen to point out that Silva cost just £43 million, which did seem a little low for one of Europe’s brightest prospects, even a couple of months before Neymar blew up the market. And although eyebrows were raised at Ederson’s £35m fee, making him the second costliest goalkeeper in history, City were telling people they had secured two ‘bargains’.That did come back to bite them a couple of months down the line; Spurs chairman Daniel Levy got wind of what he deemed to be boasting on City’s part, and effectively told them, ‘if £35m for a young goalkeeper with fewer than 100 senior games under his belt is a bargain, then what’s Kyle Walker worth to you?’. After Dani Alves’ snub made the situation all the more tricky for City, Levy managed to get £54m out of them. Monaco saw the Walker fee and quickly demanded similar for Benjamin Mendy, so perhaps lessons need to be learned behind the scenes.Yet given City’s incredible results and performances, and another profitable set of accounts, few will care about all that now. Walker and Mendy have already proving to be big hits (even if the latter has mainly boosted morale from the sidelines), while Ederson is bringing the attributes Claudio Bravo was supposed to bring. The Brazilian has exceeded all expectations and could indeed already be regarded as a bargain. Silva, however, has had a slower start to life. Much like Leroy Sane a year ago, there is a distinct feeling that the best is yet to come. In fact, at several stages last season there were a large number of City fans wondering why the best part of £40m had been spent on the German when full-backs were so clearly needed. Nobody is questioning the winger now, of course, and it is partly because of his fine form, as well as Raheem Sterling’s improvement and the continued brilliance of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, that there has been considerably less pressure on Silva. The 23-year-old has not been helped by the fact he only started training with City in August, after the club’s pre-season tour. It is clear that the vast majority of City’s players are carrying out Guardiola’s orders better this season, and as the Catalan explained this week it is during the summer that he works hardest on tactical drills.“In pre-season people think about physical preparation, but that is when you have to look at the tactics,” he told a press conference. “That is when you have to forget about runs, and think about tactics.”Silva, thanks to his involvement with Portugal at the Confederations Cup, would have missed a lot of important information. Adapting to a new club in a new league is another obvious hurdle. But while it is completely understandable that he cannot yet do what Guardiola wants as well as those who were at the club last season, it has been noted behind the scenes that the playmaker is taking a little longer to get it than most.As a potentially surprising example, the club’s English players are said to have picked things up much quicker, whether Sterling last season or Walker this. And Silva’s case is not entirely comparable to Sane’s early struggles; Guardiola and his staff believed it was a lack of confidence that held the winger back, not a lack of understanding. Not that there is a major issue with Silva; the City coaches are genuinely pleased with his contribution to the team so far, and are particularly happy with his individual talent; how he can destabilise teams with dribbles or passes. But they want to see a better grasp of the classic Guardiola ‘positional play’ principles; particularly his reading of the game so he takes up the right positions in regards to his team-mates. “Bernardo is a player who never plays bad,” Guardiola said, rather generously, following City’s 1-0 win over Feyenoord on Tuesday. “He makes little mistakes with the ball or in taking decisions, but he is probably the guy who runs the most.”He is clever and intelligent, a player who is clear inside or outside. He does not have the speed of Raz or Leroy, for example, but he is so, so clever. He’s a young player, he was so important last season for Monaco. For example, the last 10 or 15 minutes he played against Napoli, when it was 3-2, he came on and helped see out the game, he had the quality to have the ball and keep it.”He is in the beginning, we are getting to know each other and maybe he needs a little bit more time to understand exactly what we are looking for, but he is so intelligent.”Although he has played in the front line, City still see Silva as a central playmaker, and coaches want him to be more like David Silva, the first Blues player to grasp Guardiola’s demands; it is said he only needed one chat with the Catalan to realise exactly what was needed. But it is also noted that the Spaniard took a season to get used to his surroundings when he first arrived in Manchester, so there is confidence the younger Silva will get there with time. Then he really will be a bargain. read more
Beijing: At least 12 people were killed and 125 others injured after two strong earthquakes hit China’s southwest Sichuan province on Monday, authorities said Tuesday. The first 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook Changning county of Yibin city at 10:55 PM on Monday (local time) and according to the China Earthquake Centre (CENC), the second tremor of 5.3-magnitude hit the area on Tuesday. “As so far, 12 people died and another 125 were injured,” the Ministry of Emergency Management said. Also Read – Merkel warns UK Brexit deal ‘unlikely’ without compromise: LondonThe epicentre of Monday’s quake was recorded at a depth of 16 km, the CNCC said. Most of the deaths were caused by damaged houses, according to rescuers. Fifty-three people are receiving treatment in two hospitals in Changning. Among them, two are in critical conditions and six others are severely injured. Official media reported that early warning systems installed in Chengdu and Yibin sounded alarms a minute before the quake struck. The deaths and injuries were reported from across the province. Also Read – India, China should jointly uphold peace and stability, resolve disputes through dialogues: Chinese ambassador”Two people remain trapped and one of them is in critical condition,” a rescuer told state-run Xinhua news agency. Four people have been rescued and sent to a hospital, according to a rescuer in Shuanghe township. People in Yibin said aftershocks were felt in the following half-an-hour of the earthquakes. “I was resting in my house when the quake struck,” said Chen Hongxia, who lives on the 16th floor of a residential building in Changning County. “The chandelier and furniture were vigorously shaking, and my family first hid in the toilet and then rushed outside,” Chen said, adding that many of her neighbours rushed to the ground floor. Hu Yukun, also a resident of Changning County, said the quake was quite strong, and that “the ground kept shaking for about a minute.” Local policeman He Zexi said he first felt the electric fan in his house shaking and then the chandelier began to shake. “It lasted about 30 seconds,” he said. In provincial capital Chengdu, an early warning system alerted the people about one minute before the earthquake struck. When the countdown ended, strong tremor was felt. The Ministry of Emergency Management and the provincial department of emergency management have activated an “emergency response”, according to Xinhua. The ministry has sent a work team to the affected areas to provide guidance in rescue and disaster relief. The National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration and the ministry have dispatched 5,000 tents, 10,000 folding beds and 20,000 quilts to the quake-hit areas, the state media reported. Sixty-three fire tenders and about 302 fire fighters from Sichuan province have been rushed to the scene for rescue operations, the ministry said. The Hongyuan Hotel in Meidong township collapsed during the earthquake, according to the county government. The quake caused cracks in a major highway connecting Yibin and Xuyong County of Sichuan’s Luzhou city and it has has been closed. Some sections of two other highways have also been shut. Meidong and Shuanghe, which are near the epicentre of the quakes, are suffering from poor telecommunications and the townships are being lashed by heavy rains since Monday. Local police are trying to evacuate the people to safety and hospital staff, firemen and other rescuers are rushing to quake-hit areas for rescue efforts. Strong tremors were felt in major districts of neighbouring Chongqing Municipality, which is not far from the epicentre, and a few residential houses were damaged. However, no casualties were reported, the Chongqing Municipal Emergency Management Bureau said. Changning is around 300 km from Chengdu and about 240 km from Chongqing. read more
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly has sued a New Jersey ex-politician for writing on his Facebook page that O’Reilly sexually harassed his ex-girlfriend and wanted her to dig up dirt on another accuser.A summons filed on Friday in New York state court seeks redress for Michael J. Panter’s “intentional, malicious, and bad faith actions in making defamatory and false statements in a publicly available social media post.”Panter served in the New Jersey assembly as a Democrat for two terms from 2004 to 2008. There was no immediate response to a phone message left at his office.O’Reilly is asking for at least $5 million in damages “for the public hatred, ridicule, disgrace, and permanent harm to his professional and personal reputations” as a result of the post, according to the court document. In a Facebook post earlier this week, Panter wrote that his ex-girlfriend, a Fox employee he didn’t name, had settled a claim against O’Reilly and was bound by a non-disclosure agreement. But he said he felt compelled to speak out after hearing “O’Reilly spinning his falsehoods almost daily.”Panter then detailed a phone conversation between the girlfriend and O’Reilly in which, according to Panter, O’Reilly asked her if she knew anything about another accuser’s sex life and use of illegal drugs.“In essence, the leadership of Fox … was demanding information to attack another victim,” he wrote. read more
“Much as some would like to open up another front of attack on the United Nations, this dog of an argument won’t bark. I urge all stakeholders to come to Tunis ready to bridge the digital divide, ready to build an open, inclusive information society that enriches and empowers all people,” he declared. In an opinion piece published in the 5 November issue of The Washington Post and picked up subsequently by newspapers around the world ahead of this week’s World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), Mr. Annan conjured up a vision of the “dramatic, even revolutionary, change in realms ranging from health and education to journalism and politics” that should be shared with poorer nations.”Far from plotting its capture, the UN wants only to ensure the Internet’s global reach,” he wrote regarding Web governance. “That effort is at the heart of this summit.”For historical reasons, he noted, the United States, which “deserves our thanks for having developed the Internet and made it available to the world,” has the ultimate authority over some of its core resources.”It is an authority that many say should now be shared with the international community,” he added. “The United States, which has exercised its oversight responsibilities fairly and honourably, itself recognizes that other governments have legitimate public policy and sovereignty concerns, and that efforts to make the governance arrangements more international should continue.”But of all the options for future oversight arrangements drawn up by the Working Group on Internet Governance ahead of the Summit, which opens Wednesday and runs through Friday, “none says the UN should take over from the technical bodies now running the Internet; none proposes to create a new UN agency; and some suggest no UN role at all,” Mr. Annan stressed.”All say that the day-to-day management of the Internet should be left to technical institutions, not least to shield it from the heat of day-to-day politics. Everyone acknowledges the need for more international participation in discussions of Internet governance issues. The disagreement is over how to achieve it. So let’s set aside fears of UN ‘designs’ on the Internet.”He emphasized the Internet’s role as an agent for change. “In the UN’s own work for development, we have glimpsed only the beginnings of the benefits it can provide: for victims of disaster, quicker, better coordinated relief; for poor people in remote areas, lifesaving medical information; and for people trapped under repressive governments, access to uncensored information, an outlet to air their grievances and appeal for help,” he wrote. But at the same time he noted potential risks involved, while pleading the cause of an uncensored Internet. “There are also legitimate concerns about the use of the Internet to incite terrorism or help terrorists, disseminate pornography, facilitate illegal activities or glorify Nazism and other hateful ideologies,” he wrote.”But censoring cyberspace, compromising its technical underpinnings or submitting it to stringent governmental oversight, would mean turning our backs on one of today’s greatest instruments of progress. To defend the Internet is to defend freedom itself.”Today, Mr. Annan met with the Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.The current draft outcome document for the 16-18 November Summit recognizes that existing arrangements have worked well and that the security and stability of the Internet must be maintained. At the same time, it acknowledges that current mechanisms do not adequately address international public policies and that there is a need to evolve towards a multilateral framework involving governments, the private sector, civil society and international organizations. The draft calls for the strengthening of specialized regional internet management institutions and for greater participation by developing countries in decisions regarding Internet governance. It also invites the Secretary-General to establish, in early 2006, the Internet Governance Forum, which would work to find solutions to Internet issues without replacing existing structures. The Forum would have no oversight function. read more
Then again, fans weren’t exactly being treated to great hockey — and the trade of star Ron Francis and the talk of relocation didn’t help to build goodwill either. In the 1989-90 season, the Whalers had a slightly above-average 38-33-9 record and also earned slightly above-average revenues. But things went underwater from there: the Whalers never had a winning season again. The question is whether the Islanders would be better off with one-eighth of a loaf in New York or a market to themselves in Connecticut. Considering the popularity of the New York Rangers (and the presence of the New Jersey Devils), the inadequacy of the Barclays Center for hockey, and all the other competition for the fans’ entertainment dollar in New York, it’s probably a pretty close call. It was one of the best logos in all of sports. A green “W,” and a blue whale’s tail, neatly using the negative space to form an “H,” as in “Hartford Whalers.” Unfortunately, they don’t give out Stanley Cups for graphic design. The Whalers didn’t have a lot of success on the ice, winning just one playoff series in 18 NHL seasons before moving to North Carolina and becoming the Carolina Hurricanes before the 1997-98 season. But now there’s a chance the Whalers could resurface. The state of Connecticut is pursuing the New York Islanders, who are in danger of being kicked out of their woefully inadequate arena at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The team would play at the XL Center in Hartford, the Whalers’ former home. How successful might Whalers 2.0 be? In a 2013 study, I estimated that about 175,000 avid NHL fans live in the Hartford-New Haven metro area. That sounds bad, though it’s comparable to or slightly better than some of the lower-tier American NHL markets, including Columbus, Raleigh-Durham, Miami and Nashville (and better than Las Vegas, where the NHL is expanding). Furthermore, there’s potentially room for growth. According to our estimates, 7 percent of adults in the Hartford metro area were avid NHL fans in 2013. But the percentage is 13 percent in the New York metro area and 17 percent in the Boston metro area. If the Islanders or another team were to relocate to Hartford, the numbers would probably improve. The Hartford-New Haven media market is the largest in the U.S. without a “big four” sports franchise. But it’s only about one-eighth the size of New York’s media market (which includes Long Island and Northern New Jersey).Of course, the NHL’s last stint in Hartford didn’t exactly end successfully. Between the 1989-90 and 1996-97 seasons, the average NHL team’s revenues more than doubled, increasing from $22 million to $52 million, according to estimates from Forbes and Financial World magazines. But the Whalers’ revenues didn’t increase at all during this period, flatlining at about $25 million. That doesn’t adjust for inflation, so their income actually decreased on a real basis. read more
Junior left fielder Ronnie Dawson (4) takes a swing during a game against Bethune-Cookman.Credit: Giustino Bovenzi | Lantern reporterIn a winner-take-all semifinal game on Sunday morning, the Ohio State baseball team came up with the necessary hits to beat Michigan State for a second straight day and punch its ticket to the Big Ten championship game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes came right out of the gate swinging the bat, reaching base with their first three batters of the game to load the bases with no outs. After a fielder’s choice gave OSU an early 1-0 lead, junior center fielder Troy Montgomery laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that extended the lead to 2-0.The third inning was filled with plenty of run scoring for both teams. In the top half of the third, Montgomery drove in his second run of the day with an RBI single to center field. But after falling behind 3-0 to the Buckeyes, the Spartans bounced back quickly.MSU junior second baseman Dan Durkin drove a double to right field to bring the score to 3-2. He was able to score and knot the game up at three after redshirt freshman right fielder Dan Chmielewski singled to center field.Started on a double steal attempt in the top of the sixth inning, OSU capitalized on some Spartan miscues. A throwing error by the Spartans’ catcher allowed sophomore right fielder Tre’ Gantt to score and reclaim the lead for the Buckeyes. Then in the seventh, an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt and a wild pitch to the next batter allowed a fifth and sixth Buckeye run to score. A three-run seventh inning by The Scarlet and Gray jumped the lead to 7-3 and gave its bullpen the run protection it needed. After plaguing the Buckeyes in the second round against Iowa, the OSU bullpen was rock-solid for them against MSU. First, redshirt sophomore Kyle Michalik came into the game, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out one. Sophomore Seth Kinker was the second and final arm out of the bullpen, delivering 3.2 scoreless innings of his own, allowing no hits and striking out two to earn the save and send the Buckeyes on to the Big Ten Championship. In a rematch of the second round of the Big Ten tournament, OSU will take on the Iowa Hawkeyes with the Big Ten Championship on the line. That game will begin at 2:20 p.m. with redshirt sophomore right-hander Adam Niemeyer set to toe the rubber for the Buckeyes. read more

Blizzard has decided to hold its very own Black Friday sale this week, and if you’re one of the few gamers yet to play World of Warcraft or StarCraft II, then keep reading.Blizzard offers digital copies of its games directly through Battle.net with pricing usually matching that of the physical, retail versions. But right now the developer is offering up to a 75 percent discount on certain titles and expansions.World of Warcraft typically costs $19.99 in digital form, but if you purchase a copy for the remainder of this week you’ll only pay $4.99. The expansion Mists of Pandaria has also been temporarily reduced to $9.99 where as it usually costs $39.99.StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is usually $39.99, but currently costs only $19.99. Heart of the Swarm has been reduced down to $19.99. Blizzard is also making the digital deluxe edition of Heart of the Swarm available for $39.99 (usually $59.99). The extras that version includes are the Torrasque Ultralisk Skin, 3 Portraits, and 3 Decals in StarCraft II, Baneling Pet in World of Warcraft, and Blade Wings and Banner Sigil in Diablo III.Regardless of what you choose to purchase, the digital copy linked to your Battle.net account is fully upgradeable. So, for example, if you want some of the other World of Warcraft expansions you can purchase and link them to your $5 copy of the original game. These deals aren’t any better than what Blizzard chose to offer last year for Thanksgiving. In fact, for World of Warcraft the offer is decidedly worse. In 2012 you could pick up the Battle Chest, including WoW, The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King for $4.99. StarCraft II was $19.99, but the retail price 12 months ago was $59.99, not today’s $39.99. What would have been great is if WoW had gone free this week as Blizzard still gets paid from anyone who carries on subscribing after the first month.Blizzard has also pointed out that Diablo III is being discounted on PC, Mac, PS3, and Xbox 360, but you’ll have to go and pick up a physical copy from an actual store. read more
